about

After having a series of successful live performances, Acclimate began to increase in notoriety. It soon became quite commonplace for friends of Phil and Artemis to attend rehearsal sessions in preparation for live shows; indirectly this lead to the formation of .Com. Ernest was doing spoken word and poetry about town, Leon was an aspiring freestylist and Jeff played guitar: why not include them in post-Acclimate rehearsal jam sessions for a bit of fun? These sessions were also completely improvisational but again had some refining moments which we wished to further pursue. To my surprise I soon found we were having .Com jam sessions a few times each month! The noisier aesthetic of Acclimate was still present, and I found if you slowed down faster industrial dance or jungle type loops you had these perfect funk/hip hop hybrid rhythms which were easy for the others to latch on to.

To be honest, I was originally vehemently opposed to adding a guitarist but in listening to these tracks now the guitar adds a unique and cohesive dynamic that I can’t imagine without it.

Interestingly enough, we never seemed to be concerned about recording a release for Acclimate or .Com. Any recordings went straight to cassette or DAT with virtually no mixing, multitracking or level setting—we always wanted to surprise the others with what we were going to bring to the fold; to audition it beforehand simply to set a level was unthinkable! The only point to recording our jams was in order to listen back and see which sound elements and processes worked and which did not. Who cared if a sound clipped on the tape—it wouldn’t sound like that at our live shows anyway… In retrospect, I wish we had devoted more attention to archiving our sessions. There are some truly great moments that have been forever lost due to either a lack of recording or poor, unsalvageable mixes.

This collection is the partial result of sifting through two years of recordings over several months; These tracks aren't perhaps the real gems of recordings during that time but they were felt to be worth releasing.

All tracks have been remastered using the original cassette and DAT recordings; some of these recordings were very poor and every effort has been made to clean them up as best as possible. There are also occasional mistakes made by participants in these projects, but as these sessions were all one take and completely improvisational they have been left to remain true to the original integrity of the recordings. We hope you enjoy these collected works and we look forward to presenting the A side material in the forseeable future.
